In this age of increasing acceptance of e-commerce in Nigeria, Some ignoble elements parading themselves as online commerce businesses are bent on damaging the reputation of honest operators.
I had an emergency and had to travel to Lagos last weekend for a day and needed a quiet place to stay...As a former proponent of e-commerce (having worked in Konga.com), I headed online for convenience and found this site hotels.ng
My booking was confirmed electronically by e-mail and by SMS on Thursday. I equally called on the contact number on their website and got verbal confirmation before I set out from Port Harcourt to Lagos on Monday evening. After several delays due to bad weather and ....I guess simple age long inefficiency, Our flight NG320 on aero arrived LOS airport by 10pm.
Long story short, I got to Unilag Guest House by 11pm very exhausted very eager to shower and sleep off. On getting to the counter, the lady initially checked all though their reservations and stated "Oga, No reservations in your name" I said this is impossible as I couldnt even imagine leaving campus that night in search of another space.
After pressing hard, The guest house staff gave me the true picture: Hotels.ng staff came to the Unilag guest house, marketed the package to the management, without waiting for any feedback; whether approved, declined or not...Hotels.ng hosted Unilag Guest House as one of their hotels and even willing to collect payments upfront if the customer falls for it. I understand I am the 3rd of such victims to the online scam of Hotels.ng
I ended up paying for a room 300% more expensive than my original booking on Hotels.ng, and the extra budgetary expenditures made me loose sleep half the night.
This is very terrible experience. We are building a new system of business in Nigeria online and the trust quotient is still very low with over 70% of customers preferring to pay online. The last thing that burgeoning sector needs is deception, Erroneus posting or outright fraud which I suspect are all fatal flaws in the Hotels.ng posting of Unilag Guest House as their subscribing hotels.
If dem like...They should "Kontunu" One day, Monkey go go market, e no go see road to come back again!
